Eddie Nketiah scored a late winner as Crystal Palace
consigned Liverpool to their first league defeat of the season at Selhurst Park
on Saturday.
The former Arsenal striker delivered the sucker punch for
Palace, FA Cup winners, against Liverpool, the EPL champions, deep into
additional time.
Federico Chiesa’s late strike seemed to have been enough to
maintain Liverpool’s unbeaten run but Palace had other ideas, Nketiah regaining
the lead for the hosts who had go ahead initially through Ismael Sarr.
The EPL champions handed Alexander Isak his first league
start, but it was not the debut the Swedish striker would have hoped for in the
absence of the suspended Hugo Ekitike.
Sarr capitalised on a free knockdown in the box from a
corner kick to slam home the opener on nine minutes, and the Eagles were
holding on for victory but Liverpool pressure paid off on 87 minutes, Chiesa
volleying home for 1-1.
Liverpool have won majority of their games with last-minute
goals, but it was Palace with the all-important late goal on 97 minutes when
Nketiah lashed home a shot at the back post for 2-1 final scoreline.
Victory for Crystal Palace means the FA Cup winners are the
only unbeaten side in the league, and they moved up to second place with 12
points, three behind Liverpool in first place.
Elsewhere, Manchester United conceded two early goals
enroute a 3-1 loss at Brentford. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for an
opportunity to equalize, as the Red Devils lost their third match f the six
matches-old season.
Ten-man Chelsea also suffered a surprise 3-1 loss at home to
Brirghton, while Manchester City scored four second half goals- including a
late Haaland brace- for a comfortable 5-1 win over Burnley.
