Enugu Govt vows to arrest illegal revenue taskforce extorting scavengers

17 hours ago 16

The Enugu State Government has pledged to investigate and arrest individuals involved in an illegal taskforce extorting revenue from scavengers in the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, made this known on Tuesday in Enugu while condemning the activities of the unauthorized taskforce.

He assured that the government would identify and punish those responsible under the law.

Onyia clarified that while the government had set up a committee to explore solutions to scavenger-related security concerns, no official environmental taskforce was established.

He warned residents against paying money to any individuals or groups falsely claiming to collect revenue on behalf of the government.

He further revealed that an investigation is underway to uncover those behind the fraudulent scheme and determine where the illegally collected funds were deposited.

Additionally, Governor Peter Mbah has ordered the immediate recovery of all illegally collected revenue.

The government urged the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal taskforce activities while assuring that necessary actions would be taken to curb such extortion.
