A former Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport in Akwa Ibom State, Ini Ememobong, has emerged as the new National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Naija News reports that Ememobong, a lawyer and public relations strategist, was elected on Saturday at the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
His emergence marks a return to a role he once held in Akwa Ibom, where he previously served as the state PDP publicity secretary. This position brought him prominence within the party.
Ememobong resigned from Governor Umo Eno’s cabinet in June following the governor’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress.
Widely regarded as one of Governor Eno’s closest aides, he had earlier served in former Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration as Commissioner for Information.
His political journey stretches back to his student years. As an undergraduate at the University of Uyo, he served as national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students before being appointed Special Assistant on Students’ Matters to former Governor, now Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
In his first official statement after his election, Ememobong expressed gratitude and embraced the task ahead.
He said, “I accept this assignment with a deep sense of responsibility, trusting that He who has been my help in ages past will remain my source and strength as I undertake this national duty for our party at a time like this.”
The new publicity secretary acknowledged the numerous challenges confronting the PDP as an opposition party.
He added, “Yet, I believe, as my campaign theme stated, that this is our moment of rebirth, a time to build anew from the old, to rekindle the flame, and to present to Nigerians an opposition party they can genuinely trust.”
Ememobong praised the new National Executive Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN).
He said he believed the NEC would rebuild the PDP into “a resilient political machinery capable of offering effective opposition to the ruling party and becoming a true home for principled politicians across the country.”
He appealed to Nigerians for support in strengthening democratic governance.
“We seek the support of Nigerians in the collective task of ensuring democratic consolidation and deepening true democratisation in our nation,” he said.
