Electricity workers suspend strike – Blueprint Newspapers Limited

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) on Thursday suspended its industrial action after the intervention of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

The decision was contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by NUEE, the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC), the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and the Ministry of Power.

The suspension followed a meeting in Abuja between ministry officials, TCN management and the electricity workers’ unions. Adelabu, who could not attend in person, was represented by the ministry’s Director of Distribution Services and Director of Planning, Research and Statistics.

According to the MoU, TCN and the Nigeria Integrated System Operator (NISO) will meet to assess the financial implications of a committee report and prepare an implementation plan for presentation to the minister and the unions. The process is expected to be concluded between October 6 and 7, 2025, with implementation slated to commence the same month.

The agreement further tasked the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to expedite action on the review of tariffs for both TCN and NISO in order to facilitate the implementation of the report’s recommendations.

It also assured union members that no worker would be victimised for taking part in the industrial action, while both sides agreed to reconvene for further discussions to resolve outstanding issues.

“Based on the above, the union agreed to suspend their action to allow these resolutions to be activated,” the document stated.

NUEE had on Wednesday issued a strike notice, sparking fears of a nationwide blackout. However, the Nigerian Consumer Protection Network clarified that power outages in parts of Abuja were due to operational challenges by a distribution company, not a national grid collapse.
