Super Eagles captain, William Ekong has hinted this year’s AFCON in Morocco could be his last.

The experienced defender has previously featured at the 2019, 2021 as well as 2023 editions of the tournament.

He led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON and was named the tournament’s MVP.

He revealed his position on this year’s AFCON in a podcast.

“I actually brought my Gopro(for filming content) to the AFCON and filmed day one, but I couldn’t go on…,” he said.

“I’m conscious of my role in the team now and I feel like if you’re the captain or someone the younger lads look up to, I don’t know if I give the right message by walking around and filming everything, and trying to maybe instead of being present, I’d be trying to show other people that moment.

“So, it’s hard to find that balance because during tournaments like that, it’s so intense because there are emotions (people upset, someone sad he’s not playing, something goes wrong..) so I felt you have to be consistent.”

or not do it at all.

“I probably will bring it back for the next one *because it’s probably going to be my last and i also just want to have it for memories and show them to my children.”
