Ekiti State Govt Bans Graduation Ceremonies for Kindergarten, Primary, Secondary Schools

The Ekiti State government has announced a sweeping ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils in kindergarten, nursery, primary, and secondary classes across all public and private schools, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session.

The directive, outlined in a circular issued by Mr. Mike Omolayo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, aims to alleviate financial burdens on parents and curb extravagant practices linked to such events.

The policy responds to growing concerns over the financial strain imposed by lavish graduation ceremonies, which often include costly attire, elaborate parties, and other expenses that place undue pressure on families.

“This measure is designed to promote fiscal responsibility and ensure that education remains accessible without unnecessary costs,” the circular stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to prioritizing parental welfare and educational equity.

In addition to the ban, the state has revised its textbook policy to further ease financial pressures.

Primary school textbooks, previously replaced every six years, will now be reviewed on the same cycle, while secondary school textbooks will transition from a three-year replacement schedule to every four years.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to pass down textbooks to younger siblings, provided the books remain in good condition, fostering a culture of resourcefulness and sustainability.
