The Ekiti State Government on Monday distributed N2 billion to 800 retirees to clear gratuity arrears, bringing the total gratuity payments to N14.6 billion and pension payments to N25 billion over three years.
Governor Biodun Oyebanji, represented by Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye, presented cheques to retirees from 2015 and 2016 during a ceremony in Ado-Ekiti.
Oyebanji emphasized his commitment to improving retirees’ welfare, noting that his administration paid N1.3 billion in gratuity arrears in 2024 and has now increased this to N2 billion.
As of September 2025, 10,106 retirees on the State Pensioners’ Payroll receive regular, timely pensions. The governor also approved a N20 million increase in monthly pensions for all pensioner categories.“I’m thrilled to see retirees happy.
As a son of a retiree, I understand the anxiety of waiting years for gratuity. Our disciplined financial management has enabled us to pay N25.97 billion in pensions and N9.6 billion in gratuities since 2022, covering all 2013-2016 state retirees,” Oyebanji said.
He added that N183.87 million was disbursed to 159 retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme from 2022 to 2025.
The governor promised to expand payments in 2026 through prudent resource management. Head of Service Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi praised the initiative as a fulfillment of Oyebanji’s welfare promises, assuring active workers of a secure retirement future.
Leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, and Joint Negotiating Council commended Oyebanji for transforming retirees’ lives through prompt payments.
Beneficiaries Oladapo Akinola and Adejoke Omoseebi described the payment as a meaningful “third-year gift,” highlighting the governor’s empathy and the significance of the N14.6 billion gratuity milestone
