Tragedy struck on Thursday in Benin City as the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga, suddenly slumped and died while attending a public function.
Gbenga had just finished delivering a goodwill message at a programme organised by the International Association of World Peace Advocates at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Centre when he collapsed on his seat.
Attempts to revive him at the venue proved unsuccessful before he was rushed to the Military Hospital in Benin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses at the event described the development as shocking, noting that the commandant had walked into the venue looking healthy. One attendee, Odion Ugbe, recounted that Gbenga appeared full of life only moments before tragedy struck. “He had just read his speech and was sitting down when he slumped. Medical personnel tried to resuscitate him, but it was too late,” Ugbe said, adding that the late commandant was a gentleman dedicated to national service.
Confirming the incident, NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale said, “Yes, it is true that we lost the Edo State Commandant this afternoon. He slumped during a function.”
The sudden death left guests at the event in shock, with many still struggling to come to terms with the loss of the senior security officer.
