Edo assembly okays death sentence for kidnappers

The Edo House of Assembly, on Tuesday amended the existing anti-kidnapping law 2013, which provided for life imprisonment for kidnappers and confiscation of property allegedly used for the crime.

The legislators made the alteration during the clause by clause consideration of the bill and afterwards passed the kidnapping prohibition law 2025 approving death sentence for offenders. 

Majority leader of the House, Charity Aiguobarueghian, moved the motion for the House to resolve into the committee of the whole to consider the bill. 

The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Henry Okaka, member representing Owan East. 

The speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, thereafter directed that copies of the bill should be forwarded to the state governor for assent.

In another development, the Assembly also passed a bill for a law to repeal the Edo state electricity law 2022.

The law seeks to establish Edo state electricity market, Edo state electricity regulatory commission and Edo electrification agency.
