Edo Assembly confirms 4 commissioner nominees

From Tony Osauzo, Benin

The Edo State House of Assembly has confirmed four additional nominees as commissioners into the state executive council.

Those confirmed were Vincent Osas Uwadia, Etin-osa Ogbeiwi, Saturday Uwuilekhue Idehen and Charity Amayaenvbo.

The State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, had earlier in a letter dated August 20, requested the state assembly to screen and confirm five nominees as commissioners in the state.

The fifth nominee, Prof Roland Otaru was absent for screening and could not be confirmed.

The confirmation of the nominees followed the consideration of the report of the House Committee on Rules, Business and Government House on the screening of the four nominees presented by the chairman and Majority Leader of the House, Jonathan Ibhamawu.

The House, during plenary, adopted the one-point recommendation of the report of the Committee on Rules, Business and Government House that the four nominees be confirmed as commissioners after their successful screening, which found them educationally fit and proper to serve in the state.

Consequently, the House, after deliberation on the report of the Committee on the screening of the four nominees, cleared and confirmed them.

Also yesterday, two bills scaled second reading on the floor of the House and were referred to the appropriate Committees for further inputs.

The bill for a law to protect government property and establish the Edo State Protection Committee was referred to the House Committee on Security for further input with a mandate to submit its report within three weeks .

Similarly, the bill seeking to amend the law to provide for the order of precedence was referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges and its report to be submitted within three weeks for consideration.
