Editors Call for Review of Cybercrime Act, Urge Focus on Good Governance – Daily Trust

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has called for a review of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act to ensure that it is applied strictly for its original purpose of tackling financial fraud, identity theft, and cyber attacks, rather than being used against journalists.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Guild’s Standing Committee meeting held on September 17, 2025, in Jos, Plateau State.

The communiqué, signed by the NGE President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, expressed concern over reports of harassment of journalists under the Cybercrime Act. The Guild said it would continue to defend press freedom while urging journalists to maintain professionalism and adhere to the Nigerian Press Organisation’s Code of Ethics.

The Guild also reminded security agencies of the Ombudsman process established by the Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO), which it said provides a credible platform to address ethical infractions in journalism.

On the political landscape, the NGE cautioned political actors in both government and the opposition to focus on governance and proffer solutions to national issues rather than engage in personal attacks or divisive rhetoric that could heighten tensions in the country.

The editors further reminded the three tiers of government of their responsibility to prioritize citizens’ socio-economic welfare and security over discussions about future elections, stressing the need to fulfill current mandates before seeking new terms.

The communiqué also called on the federal government and security agencies to intensify efforts in addressing insecurity, including banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and farmer-herder clashes, noting that these challenges threaten lives, food security, and national stability.

The Guild expressed appreciation to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, for hosting the meeting and commended efforts aimed at promoting peace and improving the welfare of residents in the state.
