ECOWAS condemns attempted military takeover in Benin Republic

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the reported attempted military coup in the Republic of Benin, describing it as “an unconstitutional move” and a threat to the nation’s democratic stability.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the regional bloc expressed concern over the attempted takeover, urging strict adherence to Benin’s constitutional order. ECOWAS also commended the country’s authorities for swiftly containing the situation.

The statement warned those behind the plot that they would be held accountable for any loss of life or property resulting from their actions, emphasizing collective and individual responsibility.

ECOWAS pledged full support to Benin, including the potential deployment of its regional standby force if necessary, to safeguard the country’s constitution and territorial integrity.

The regional organization’s response reflects its long-standing commitment to democracy and stability in West Africa, reinforcing support for lawful governance across member states.

Authorities in Benin have confirmed that the attempted takeover was contained, and order has been restored, though details about the perpetrators remain limited.
