A final year student of medical laboratory science and two other students have been rusticated from Ebonyi state University, Abakaliki.
The students were expelled by the management of the institution for possession of unlawful firearms and live ammunition.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Michael Awoke, announced their expulsion during the inauguration of the newly elected Students Union Government (SUG) executive for the 2025/2026 session held on Friday, at the CAS campus of the university.
Awoke said the institution’s management decided to expel the students to serve as deterrent to others.
He however, warned that the era of cultism was over in the university as anyone found guilty of cultism, examination malpractice, or in possession of weapons to intimidate students or staff will be shown the way out of the university.
The three expelled students were said to had been arrested with guns and live ammunitions during the recently held SUG election in the university.
The management gave the names of the expelled students to include Lawrence from Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Enyinnaya from Department of Architecture and Joshua Department of Animal Science. (surnames withheld)
Pronouncing explosion of the student, the Vice Chancellor said, “Lawrence is a final year student of medical laboratory science department of this University. He was caught for unlawful possession of firearms ,he is already before the court of competent jurisdiction with the other two. They shot to scare away students and tried to kill the Dean of Student Affairs. I want to tell you people that the law must take it’s course.
“This issue of cultism is banned in Ebonyi state University as long as Professor Awoke is the Vice Chancellor. This issue of coming to the University environment with guns must stop. The issue of using guns to intimidate my lecturers to award you marks must stop with immediate effect. To that effect,these three students already involved are hereby expelled from the University.
“We are following the matter up in court. Being a student and you unlawfully have gun you use to intimidate your fellow students and Dean because of SUG election is not acceptable. Their expulsion is expected to be deterrent to others. By the powers vested on me as the Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi state University the aforementioned students are hereby rusticated. They are no longer my students.”
