Ebonyi-born Festus Igube has won a bronze medal in the ongoing Invictus Games in Canada.
Igube, who serves with the Nigerian Army, secured Nigeria’s first-ever Invictus Games medal, finishing third in the men’s 50-metre freestyle swimming event behind competitors from Australia and the United States.
Born in Ezza North LGA of Ebonyi State, Igube was a victim of a fatal ambush by Boko Haram insurgents against Nigerian soldiers in one of the deadliest attacks.
He was counted among the dead for three days before his body was found with faint signs of life and resuscitated. He lost one of his arms in the deadly encounter.
Festus Igube was part of the Nigerian contingent to the Invictus Games in Canada.
His bronze medal is Nigeria’s first at the 2025 Invictus Games and the third medal in Nigeria’s history at the event, following the country’s debut in 2022.
President Bola Tinubu is expected to receive the Nigerian contingent at the State House upon their return.
Meanwhile, Ebonyi people have begun celebrating their son’s achievement, and it is expected that the Ebonyi State Government will also honour him.
Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru congratulated Festus Igube for making both the state and the nation proud.
“I am deeply honoured to extend my warmest congratulations to Festus Igube on his remarkable achievement.
“Winning a bronze medal is a testament to his unassailable determination, resilience, and patriotism for our dear nation, Nigeria.
“Your selfless service to our nation, despite the ultimate sacrifice of losing your hand while fighting against Boko Haram, is a shining example of courage and devotion,” Governor Nwifuru said.
The Governor commended the wounded soldier for his gallantry in overcoming physical challenges to clinch the coveted medal.
“Your achievement serves as an inspiration to us all, demonstrating that with an unyielding spirit and perseverance, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
“Please accept my heartfelt appreciation for your service and my congratulations on this outstanding achievement.
“You have made Nigeria proud, and we celebrate your triumph,” the Governor added.
