Samuel Peter (born September 6, 1980) is a former Nigerian-American boxer who won the WBC heavyweight title back in 2008. Following a string of knockout victories, he rose to popularity in his professional career at a time when the heavyweight division titles were still divided. Peter earned a share of the world heavyweight championship in March 2008, when he knocked out Oleg Maskaev to take the WBC title.

In October, Peter was defeated in eight rounds by a resurgent Vitali Klitschko in what could be his only title defence. Peter is well-known for his rivalry with the Klitschko brothers, having faced Wladimir twice (in 2005 and 2010) and Vitali once. He was dubbed “The Nigerian Nightmare”, the two-time WBC Heavyweight Champion, and became the first African heavyweight champion. Initially, Peter’s preferred sport was football. In 1992, numerous boxers arrived at his academy for training. The curious 11-year-old came by and asked if he could work out with them. He won both the Nigerian Amateur Heavyweight Championship and the Africa Zone 3 Heavyweight Championship. Following the Olympics, Ivaylo Gotzev took over as Peter’s manager, and Andy “Pops” Anderson became his coach. On February 6, 2001, Peter made his professional debut against Bulgarian boxer Georgi Hristov in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Peter won the fight via first-round knockout. He fought seven times in 2001, winning all but one of them in the first round.

Peter’s excellent performance in his early fights led to a promotional partnership with Dino Duva of Duva Boxing. The following year, Peter moved up in competition, with his first fight of the year coming against Marion Wilson. The fight was scheduled for four rounds.

On November 1, there were early reports that Peter might face former world championship challenger Kubrat Pulev in December in Sofia, Bulgaria. Five days later, Team Sauerland finalised the bout, stating that Peter and Pulev would fight on December 3 in Bulgaria. Pulev would be keeping busy ahead of his upcoming European title defence against Polish boxer Mariusz Wach.

Pulev gave up his European title on November 22. Pulev won the vacant WBA Intercontinental heavyweight title over Peter via fourth-round corner retirement (RTD) in front of 15,000 people at the Arena Armeec. Peter remained aggressive throughout but battled with Pulev’s jab. The battle was halted in round three after Peter dislocated his right shoulder while throwing a powerful blow. He returned to the corner, bending towards the right, and the injury compelled him to quit.

Peter returned to Mexico on February 22, 2019, after not fighting in two years. He appeared at the Cheers Bar & Grill in Tijuana and knocked out Gerardo Escobar in 44 seconds. On March 26, Peter signed a promotional contract with Salita Promotions and was announced to face Mexican journeyman Mario Heredia (15-6-1, 13 KOs) on April 13 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, on the undercard of Claressa Shields vs. Christina Hammer.

Prior to the fight, Heredia had a 2-5-1 record in his previous eight fights. Peter lost an eight-round split decision to Heredia at the Adrian Phillips Theatre. Peter got a knockdown in round three but was unable to finish Heredia, who fought on and won by scores of 77-74 and 76-75, with the third judge awarding Peter a 79-72 decision.
