The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) on Thursday officially launched the use of drone technology to monitor traffic across the state.
The initiative also aims to improve accident response and enhance road safety measures in Lagos.
Speaking at the unveiling, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the initiative represents a major leap in traffic management.

He explained that the drones will provide real-time aerial coverage of major traffic corridors, enabling officers to act quickly during congestion, accidents, or emergencies.
“This initiative is not just about deploying new equipment but about redefining our approach to traffic management through digital governance.
“With real-time aerial oversight, we can intervene faster, enhance safety, improve emergency coordination, strengthen security measures, and encourage a more disciplined motoring culture,” Bakare-Oki stated.
He added that the drones would be deployed for aerial reconnaissance and high-definition monitoring, allowing officers to respond proactively rather than relying solely on ground patrols.
According to him, the technology will operate under strict ethical and regulatory guidelines to protect public trust.
“We want to assure Lagosians that the use of drones will strictly comply with privacy safeguards and legal standards, guaranteeing transparency and integrity in the system,” he emphasized.
The agency explained that the innovation will complement LASTMA’s toll-free hotline, ensuring faster emergency response and more effective accident management.
Authorities stressed that the move aligns with broader state efforts to ease traffic flow, cut travel time, reduce road crashes, and instill discipline among motorists.
Bakare-Oki assured Lagos residents of the government’s commitment to modernizing road management.
“This is a bold step towards a smarter Lagos, where technology drives safety and efficiency on our roads,” he concluded.
