Global Celebrities To Feature In Lagos Water Sport Showpiece

 

Global celebrities such as former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba, retired tennis great Rafael Nadal, American basketball power forward LeBron James and other superstars are set to storm Nigeria for the E1 Lagos GP 2025 scheduled for October 4th to 5th, 2025.

The organisers disclosed this on Friday, September 19, as the Lagos Lagoon bubbled with activities when journalists, influencers, and creators gathered at the LASWA Boat Jetty in Ikoyi for a media ‘immersion’ to learn more about the E1 Lagos GP 2025.

E1 Lagos GP 2025: World’s First All-Electric Raceboat Series Comes To Lagos

According to an executive member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for E1 Lagos GP 2025, Samuel Davies, the competition is the world’s first all-electric raceboat series. At its heart are the futuristic racebirds – sleek, renewable-energy-powered boats that skim across the water at blistering speeds.

“Participated in by celebrity-backed teams, like Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, Didier Drogba and LeBron James. The championship [E1 Lagos GP 2025] is spread across seven races in seven iconic locations. Lagos is the sixth stop,” Samuel explained.

“The season reaches its grand climax at the seventh race in Miami, where the overall champion will be crowned. It’s fast, it’s green, it’s the future of water sports and Lagos is now firmly on the map.

The E1 Lagos GP 2025 in Lagos stage is set

“Seven races are scheduled, with winners set to earn 25 points for first place, 15 points for second, and 10 points for third. The points system is expected to intensify the competition and keep spectators engaged throughout.”

E1 Lagos GP 2025: Viewing Centres Across Lagos For Fans

He added that there will be viewing centres in various locations across Lagos State for residents and fans including the Boat Club Opening Point of Contact, Wing Jetty, Mikano Building Viewing Centre, and the LASWA headquarters.

According to him, each of the viewing centres for E1 Lagos GP 2025 will provide access to the excitement in real time, allowing Lagosians to feel part of the global event.

The organisers stated that during the E1 Lagos GP 2025, more than 10,000 trees will be planted, with over 100,000 attendees and more than 250,000,000 social media engagements. The nine foreign teams participating in the boat race have both genders as co-pilots, in line with the Lagos THEMES Plus agenda.

Lagos State Government Backs E1 Lagos GP 2025

Meanwhile, the Lagos State government has said that it is hosting the E1 Lagos GP 2025 to further put Lagos positively on the global map.

The Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Sam Egube, and the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated this on Friday during the media immersion programme.

Omotoso noted that E1 Lagos GP is a global event which will put Lagos on the world stage, stating that it is the first time the sport will be coming to Africa, and Lagos is proud to host it.

“This is more than putting race boats on the water. Everything about it requires science, careful planning, and accuracy. It shows that it is serious business for Lagos. It is about sustainability, creativity, and responsibility. Lagos is indeed the city of now and the city of the future,” Omotoso said.

“The environment is the only thing we can leave behind for the generations that are coming after us. We must not abuse it, and we must not mess it up. Our lagoons must remain clean, because visitors are coming, and they must see that Lagos values sustainability.”

According to him, the E1 Lagos GP 2025 is about innovation, resilience, and all the things Lagos is known for. He added that the water sport reflects what Sanwo-Olu has been encouraging and what people see, which often makes them tell others, “This is Lagos.

E1 Lagos GP 2025 As Global Opportunity

Omotoso said Sanwo-Olu sees E1 Lagos GP as an opportunity to tell the Lagos story, especially as Lagos is a land of opportunities. He disclosed that almost 450 enthusiasts of the water sport will be coming to Nigeria.

Egube added that Lagos, as a city-state, has a vision to be Africa’s model city – a global economic hub that is safe.

He explained that when Lagos is mentioned, it should be recognised as a leading place for culture, entertainment, tourism, finance, and technology, and the E1 Lagos GP aligns with this vision.

First-Ever African Host City For E1 Series

Egube also acknowledged that Lagos is the first city in Africa to host the event. He said that it is Lagos’s right to do so for Africa, especially as its vision is to be on par with outstanding cities around the world that have hosted the water sport before.

He added that the event will not just be about a race but also a big party coming to Lagos, describing it as a tactical flag-off of the “Dirty December.”
