Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku capped off a memorable Manchester derby by heading straight from the Etihad Stadium to church for his baptism.
The Belgian international starred in City’s 3-0 win over Manchester United, before marking what he described as a “victory day” in his personal life.
The 23-year-old was instrumental in the win, setting up goals for Phil Foden and Erling Haaland as Pep Guardiola’s men secured bragging rights in Manchester.
But speaking afterwards, Doku revealed that football was only part of the day’s significance.

Faith at the centre of Doku’s life
“If I can be honest, this was already a victory,” Doku said after the game. “Maybe that’s why I felt like I was pushed.
“I was already excited before the match because I knew after the game I was going to be baptised. That’s why I’m very happy with the performance as well.”
Doku has previously spoken about the role of faith in his career and said his baptism was a deliberate, adult decision.
“As a Christian, when you get baptised, your old sinful nature dies, and you start living with God,” he explained.
“You resurrect with God, with Jesus Christ. You can do it as a kid, but when you’re older you really realise what you’re doing. That’s what I wanted.”
Focus turns to Champions League
The timing of Doku’s baptism coincides with what City hope will be a turning point in their season, the win at Etihad.
After back-to-back defeats last month, Guardiola’s side showed signs of recovery against United.
Reflecting on City’s campaign so far, Doku noted: “Every season is different. Opponents play differently against us now. Sometimes you need time, but today was a good day, so I’m happy with that.”
City’s attention now shifts to the Champions League, where they host Napoli on Thursday. The tie will bring an immediate reunion with Kevin De Bruyne, who recently left City for Serie A.
“It’s exciting because a week ago I played with him for Belgium and now I’ll play against him,” Doku said. “I’m sure he’ll be happy to come back, but we’ll try to win for sure.”
