The Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF) has commended President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their firm stance on accountability following the dismissal of three suspended Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from Adamawa, Sokoto, and Abia states.
AYCF President-General, Yerima Shettima, in a statement, described the decision as a bold step towards restoring public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process and promoting ethical conduct among election officials.
He also hailed President Tinubu’s request to the Senate for the termination of the suspended RECs’ appointments, saying it aligns with constitutional oversight provisions and reinforces the commitment to electoral integrity.
The group further praised INEC’s recent anti-corruption efforts, citing the conviction of Prof. Ignatius Uduk in Akwa Ibom for electoral fraud during the 2019 elections as a significant victory against election malpractice.
“The successful prosecution of electoral offenders sets a strong precedent and sends a clear message to those seeking to undermine Nigeria’s electoral process. Holding individuals accountable will help restore confidence in the system and ensure future elections are free, fair, and transparent,” Shettima said.
AYCF also called on other stakeholders, including the Department of State Services (DSS), the police, security agencies, and political parties, to enforce disciplinary measures against individuals involved in election misconduct.
“Accountability must go beyond electoral officials. All actors in the electoral process must uphold ethical standards and conduct themselves with integrity. By working together, we can strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and ensure credible elections,” he added.
The group acknowledged the complexity of disciplinary processes within INEC and commended the commission for adhering to due process before dismissing the affected RECs.
“By taking time to investigate and follow proper procedures, INEC demonstrates its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, which is crucial for building public trust in the electoral process,” Shettima noted.
He reaffirmed AYCF’s support for President Tinubu and INEC in promoting accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s electoral system and urged Nigerians to back initiatives that strengthen democracy.
