Diri Rejects PDP South-South Congress Organised By Wike’s Camp

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has rejected the South-South Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congress reportedly organized by the camp of former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

The congress, held in Calabar, was dismissed by Diri, who stated that the national leadership of the PDP had rejected it and would announce a new date for a legitimate congress.

Diri made this known on Monday during the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, State Executive Council, SEC meeting at the party’s secretariat in Yenagoa.

He stated: “Our party is thriving in Bayelsa State. We remain the party to beat. The PDP has never lost here. If you seek relevance, you should join the PDP.

“The PDP in Bayelsa is united and cannot be weakened. This party produced a Nigerian president from our state. It has also produced governors and federal legislators.

“This party is strong at the state level and will remain so. Let us ignore rumours. Some aim to divide us, but they will not succeed.”

Governor Douye Diri clarified that no zonal congress took place in the South-South, stating that the national leadership, in consultation with zonal leaders, would determine a new date at the appropriate time.

He assured that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa remains intact and is the best platform for politicians seeking to achieve their ambitions.

Diri highlighted the party’s strong legacy, noting that it has produced key officeholders, including a former Nigerian president, and continues to dominate Bayelsa politics. He urged members to remain united and avoid distractions, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to strengthen the party in the state.

Diri further explained that the South-South zonal congress, initially scheduled for February 22, was postponed by the National Working Committee (NWC).

He revealed that the decision followed a request from the four South-South governors, who informed the party’s leadership that the date was unsuitable.

The governor’s remarks underscore the need for proper consultation and adherence to party procedures to ensure a successful and inclusive congress. Diri called for calm among party members, urging them to focus on building a stronger and more united PDP in the region.
