The Head of the Nasarawa state branch of the National Library of Nigeria, Mrs. Angela Edoo Anya, has appealed to the state government and stakeholders to intervene in connecting the facility to electricity in order to enhance service delivery to the public.
She made the appeal during a press briefing in Lafia, shortly after leading journalists on an inspection of the library.
Mrs. Anya explained that absence of electricity has led to poor services and low patronage from users.
She urged the state government and other stakeholders to take ownership of the library by providing befitting infrastructure, including office accommodation, for the benefit of the people of the state.
Anya also describe the facility as neglected, with poor infrastructure limiting its ability to serve residents.
” The Library established over a decade ago under the federal government’s drive to provide Nigerians with access to educational resources and intellectual services, the Nasarawa branch has struggled to operate optimally.
She further appealed to parents and guardians to encourage young people to use the library as a reliable and traditional source of knowledge, rather than depending solely on the internet.
Mrs. Anya emphasized that managing and strengthening the National Library should be seen as a collective responsibility, noting that most states work hand in hand with stakeholders to sustain such facilities instead of leaving the burden entirely on the federal government.
Some staff members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that they often contribute from their salaries to buy fuel for the library’s generator in order to render skeletal services.
They called for urgent intervention to rescue the facility from its current state of decline
