The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) has immortalised its former President, late Dayo Akindoju, for his remarkable impact in the sport.
NTF President, Mr. Victor Ochei, announced this in his tribute during the Service of Songs organised by the Federation in conjunction with the family, associates and friends of Akindoju.
Ochei, a former Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, declared the naming of Centre Court pavilions of the National Tennis Court after Dayo Akindoju, in recognition of his immense role in the growth and development of tennis in Nigeria.
While describing late Akindoju’s death as a painful loss to the tennis community, Rt. Hon. Ochei said, “It’s a sad loss, but you can’t question God. Dayo achieved what many people who live longer wouldn’t achieve. He laid the foundation for Nigerian tennis, and I promise to build on that structure so the game reaches its highest potential.”
He described Akindoju as one who “served Nigerian tennis with unwavering passion, vision, and dedication,” adding that his legacy would continue to inspire the development of the sport.
Meanwhile, the President of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT), Jean Claudio Talon, has pledged full support for Victor Ochei-led NTF.
Ochei and his new board were elected and inaugurated in October, 2025.
Talon noted that Ochei’s wealth of experience, leadership qualities, and administrative acumen will propel Nigerian tennis to new heights of excellence.
“Victor Ochei’s track record of effective leadership and his passion for sports development give us great confidence. Under his watch, we expect Nigerian tennis to attain enviable levels of competitiveness and productivity,” Talon said.
The CAT President also reaffirmed the continental body’s commitment to providing Nigeria with all necessary technical and developmental support to ensure the success of Ochei’s vision for the sport.
Jean Claudio Talon was among the dignitaries who attended the Night of Tribute held in honour of the late Akindoju, whose passing created the vacancy now filled by Ochei.
