Dangote Cement Plc Bolsters Road Safety with Nationwide Driver Training Program

Dangote Cement Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to road safety by launching a comprehensive training and retraining program for its drivers across Nigeria, as announced on August 22, 2025.

The initiative, detailed in a statement by Group Managing Director Arvind Pathak during the 2025 Annual Drivers’ Retreat themed “Absolute Safer Road Policy,” aims to enhance operational efficiency and ensure safer driving practices.

The program, which began with over 900 drivers at the Ibese Plant in Ilaro, Ogun State, includes defensive driving techniques, traffic regulation compliance, and vehicle maintenance training.

A similar exercise is scheduled for next week in Obajana, Kogi State. Pathak emphasized that road safety is a core mandate for the company, which operates a fleet of thousands of trucks. “The yearly training reminds our drivers of our core values and commitment to safe roads,” he said.

Dangote Cement collaborates with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other regulatory bodies to standardize training and compliance processes.

Every driver undergoes a rigorous recruitment process, including a valid Class G driver’s license, background checks, medical evaluations (vision, blood pressure, BMI, and drug tests), and a two-week intensive training program with 12 safety modules, practical assessments, and written exams.

Over 2,000 drivers have completed this process in the past two months alone.

The initiative also includes telematics for real-time monitoring of driver behavior and vehicle performance, alongside strict punitive measures for reckless driving.

The program responds to public concerns about heavy-duty vehicle safety, particularly following incidents like the recent accident involving a Dangote truck in Auchi, Edo State.

FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed praised the initiative, noting its alignment with efforts to reduce road crashes.
