Damaturu Emirate Hails Buni As BioRTC Team Begins Kidney Disease Research

DAMATURU – The Emir of Damaturu, His Royal Highness, Alh. (Dr) Shehu Hashimi II Ibn Umar Al-Amin El-Kanemi, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the ongoing kidney disease research in Damaturu and other parts of Yobe State.

The Emir made this statement on February 20, 2025, when the Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre (BioRTC) team paid him a courtesy visit at his palace in Damaturu.

The delegation was led by Dr. Mahmoud Bukar Maina, Director of BioRTC and Shettima Ilmuye of the Emirate, who visited to brief the Emir on the progress of the research and seek his continued support in encouraging community participation.

While commending the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, for initiating and funding the research, the Emir emphasized the urgent need to identify the root causes of kidney disease in the region. He also praised the efforts of Dr. Maina, describing his appointment as Special Adviser on Science, Research, and Innovation as well-deserved.

In his remarks, Dr. Maina informed the Emir that BioRTC has successfully collected over 1,300 biological and environmental samples in Bade Local Government Area and is now extending the research to Damaturu.

He expressed gratitude for the Emir’s continued support, prayers, and cooperation, emphasizing that the success of the project relies on strong community engagement.
