…Male student kills lover for ritual, judge orders death by hanging for killer
Two lovebirds in the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) are guaranteed death. One has already died, having been killed by her lover. And, a judge in Port Harcourt has approved death by hanging for the loverboy.
The incident seems to evoke sad memories of gruesome lynching of four students from same university years back and court verdict of death to more persons. The sad memories link to the fact of October being when both incidents occurred.
Mgbuoba sits in from of the Uniport while Aluu sits right behind it. Now, the Mgbuoba-2 incident of 2023 seems to link the Aluu-4 nightmare of 2012; all involving deaths and counter-deaths of students sent to learn the secrets of the whitemen and come home to change their generational lineages.
In 2012, Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, were framed up at night and lynched. Their deaths caused global outroar that exposed Nigeria’s jungle justice infamy. On July 31, 2017, Rivers State High Court sentenced police sergeant Lucky Orji, David Chinasa Ogbada and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi (aka Kapoon) to death for their involvement in the murders of the four students. So, four were killed, another four to die.
Now, in 2023, a lovergirl was killed by her own lover. Now, another Port Harcourt judge has approved death by handing for the killer-lover.
It was another October 11 years after and young girl, Justina Otuene (October 20, 2023), though her loverboy, Damian Okoligwe, was the love of her life. A video clip showing where she was swirling in his room singing for him ‘don’t dim my shine’ played. Okoligwe was seen chuckling. She did not know that her murder had been hatched.
Soon after, Okoligwe, a 400-level Petrochemical Engineering student, snuffed life out of Otuene.
Next, he dismembered her coldly and did things with her vital organs. Such has been a reigning crime in parts of the country, especially in Port Harcourt.
Boys want to ‘blow’, and that is by joining a kind of cult, then specialize in duping people in what is now known as ‘yahoo-yahoo’ which has advanced to yahoo-plus. They began by using handkerchiefs to wipe the private parts of ladies after lovemaking thereby allegedly collecting their wombs.
Now, its about killing and harvesting vital organs. Few days later, such boys begin to drive exotic cars, living large.
Now, Okoligwe may not know that his ways had become suspicious, according to court details. After dismembering Otuene, a 300-level Biochemistry student, he took the vitals, and carefully and coldly packing her remains in a wheelbarrow. It was when he was about wheeling her remains away to disposal point that he was caught.
On November 26, 2025, the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt convicted and sentenced Okoligwe to death by hanging. Justina got her revenge but too late.
Anger of a judge:
Judges suppress emotions and allow the law to decide. The justice did so in this case.
Delivering judgment, the female judge, Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu, held that the prosecution proved beyond responsible doubt, the three ingredients of case of murder against the accused. She described the action of Okoligwe as: “intentional, composed, calculated, coordinated, and evil”. She thus insisted that there was no contradiction in the evidence, hence a proof that Okoligwe actually committed the crime.
Many however heaved sigh of relief that justice was not miscarried as has happened many time in celebrated cases where the citizens expected prompt and just justice. Some recalled the background of the judge, her sound education at Madonna University, her Master’s degree in law in the United Kingdom, her years under certain justices, appointment as Magistrate in 2021, promotions due to diligence and exceptional work ethic.
Many watched the drama of death sentences. The court watched her hear the allocutus (plea for mercy) and then she rose and went into her chambers to change her cloth to a red gown and black hat (to show the seriousness of what she was about to say).
She then proceeded to sentence the defendant to death by hanging, her exacts words were “The sentence of this court is that you be taken to a lawful place of execution and there hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.”
Her job done, the rest is up to the governor to sign for death, if no appeal is started.
