Crayfish consumption declines in Cross River over scarcity, high cost

Unavailability and attendant high cost of crayfish, shrimps and such seafoods have led to reduction in their consumptions in parts of Cross River State.

Consumers, including house wives, especially in the state capital Calabar, are lamenting over the scarcity.

They said they hardly include seafoods like crayfish in their soups and other foods because they are no longer affordable.

Findings at major beach markets in the Marina area of Calabar showed that only a handful now sell crayfish, while fewer still sell shrimps and lobsters.

Madam Nkoyo Effiong, 30, who said selling crayfish has been a family business which she took over after her mother’s passing, noted that an average bag of crayfish at Obioko beach market
