A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, November 27, 2025, dismissed a fundamental rights enforcement suit brought by Tigran Gambaryan, former Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Gambaryan had asked the court to declare his detention unlawful and prolonged, and sought monetary compensation from the EFCC and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged money laundering and foreign exchange violations linked to the Binance cryptocurrency platform.
In his ruling, Justice Umar Mohammed held that the court would not use the applicant’s fundamental rights claim as a pretext to interfere with the legitimate prosecutorial powers of Nigerian authorities while investigating the serious allegations against Binance and its executives.
During proceedings, EFCC counsel Olanrewaju Adeola argued that Gambaryan’s detention was lawful and backed by pending criminal charges of money laundering and foreign exchange infractions.
He further described the suit as a “gross abuse of court process” intended to obstruct the ongoing prosecution. The court agreed with the EFCC’s position and dismissed Gambaryan’s application in its entirety.
