An Oyo State Mobile Court has ordered the remand of a motorist, Oke Ademola, in prison for allegedly assaulting two officers of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA).
The incident occurred at Agodi Gate Bus Stop, where Ademola was accused of physically attacking officers Kareem Yakubu and Ogunjimi Ayotunde.
Ademola, who was driving an unlicensed Toyota Camry, was arraigned on Friday on six charges, including disobeying traffic lights, refusing to park in designated areas, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, driving without a license, and operating an unregistered vehicle.
He pleaded guilty to the assault charge.
Presiding Magistrate F.R. Olaniyan postponed judgment until February 26, 2025, and ordered Ademola’s remand at Agodi Prison pending the ruling.
Reacting to the incident, OYRTMA Chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba, condemned the attack and expressed concern over the rising cases of motorists disregarding traffic laws and assaulting enforcement officers.
“This increasing lawlessness undermines effective traffic management and endangers public safety,” Adesagba said. “We urge all motorists to comply with regulations for the benefit of everyone.”
He also highlighted a worrying trend of attacks on OYRTMA officials, some of which have been fatal, and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic laws and ensuring the safety of its officers.
“This case serves as a strong warning against violating traffic rules and attacking law enforcement officers. OYRTMA remains committed to ensuring safer roads and better traffic management across Oyo State,” he added.
