Court affirms autonomy of ladies professional golfers

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has restrained the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (PGAN) and its agents from forcibly affiliating or subsuming Ladies Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria (LPGAN) officials and members under its control.

With the court pronouncement, the Ladies Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria has secured a legal victory affirming its independence from the Professional Golfers Association of Nigeria.

In an official notice dated October 14, 2025, addressed to committee members of the Port Harcourt Club 1928, LPGA’s legal adviser, U.C. Oparaugo, Esq., confirmed that the court’s ruling enshrines the fundamental rights of LPGAN members to freely participate in golfing activities without harassment, intimidation, or discrimination.

“The judgment reinforces the LPGAN’s right to self-governance and autonomy, with the association urging members to report any acts of intimidation or interference.

“The LPGAN expressed gratitude for members’ patience and support, pledging continued vigilance to protect their rights.

“The ruling is expected to strengthen the LPGAN’s position within Nigeria’s golfing community and safeguard women professional golfers’ rights to independent representation and management.

“The Certified true copy (CTC) of the said Ruling /judgement of Court in the matter is hereby attached for kind perusal.

“This judgment unequivocally affirms the rights of all LPGAN members to freely participate in golfing activities and tournaments without fear of intimidation, harassment, or discrimination.

“This judgment is also a resounding vindication of LPGAN’s right and autonomy, and we will not tolerate any attempt(s) to undermine our authority or disrupt our activities.

“The LPGAN also, by this judgment, reinforces our right to govern and manage our affairs without interference, Oparaugo stated.

The LPGAN Legal Adviser, therefore, urged all members to remain vigilant and report any instances of harassment or intimidation of any sort to the relevant authorities.
