Nigerian football icon Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about how he handled his finances during his professional career, highlighting the role of discipline and proper planning.
During a podcast appearance, posted on X on Thursday, Okocha explained that his earnings from club contracts were strictly earmarked for investments rather than luxury spending.
“My contract money is for investment. So, the contract? It’s investment fully,” he said.

The former Super Eagles captain added that he used match bonuses to cover daily expenses and relied on endorsement deals for lifestyle indulgences.
“Match bonuses are enough for you to live. You have endorsements, it’s enough for you to buy toys—those nice cars, nice watches, travel with your wife,” Okocha stated.
He emphasised that financial success comes down to balance and knowing when to exercise restraint. “It’s all about putting a structure in place. And if you’re not winning enough matches, then you backpedal a bit. It’s not every month that you go shopping,” he advised.
