Constructive collaboration yields results than needless confrontations – Abba Moro

From Adesuwa Tsan, Abuja

Senate Minority Leader, Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South), has defended his approach to opposition in the 10th Senate, emphasising that constructive collaboration with those in power is more effective in achieving good governance than unnecessary confrontations.

Addressing journalists covering the Senate, Moro said the Collaborative Leadership for Good Governance award bestowed upon him by the Senate Press Corps was a fitting recognition of his leadership style as minority leader.

“To me, minority leadership is not about confrontation but about engaging constructively with the ruling party to ensure good governance for Nigerians,” he stated.

He explained that opposition should focus on persuasion and influencing decision-making rather than obstruction.

“I sincerely appreciate your observations over time. As a person, I believe in collaboration. I see compromise as a vital tool for leadership advancement. Opposition, in its true sense, is meant to convince and influence those in power to act in the best interest of the people, not to create unnecessary conflict.

“Yes, I was elected on the platform of the PDP but as a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, my duty is to work with all Nigerians to advance the nation’s progress. That is why I prefer an amicable and persuasive approach to governance rather than engaging in avoidable confrontations.”

Moro also recalled how some colleagues in the minority camp urged him to adopt a combative stance on the Senate floor. However, he reminded them that similar aggressive tactics in the eighth and ninth Senate, such as attempts to impeach the then president, did not yield any tangible results.

“If a course of action is not realistic within the framework of governance and legislative processes, then it should not be pursued recklessly. I am a realist. I believe in working towards achievable goals that genuinely advance good governance,” he stressed.
