Congo DR striker Cedric Bakambu says he’s confident the team can overtake Senegal in the final rounds of matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Recall that last month saw Senegal stun DR Congo with a 3-2 thriller to snatch the top spot. The fate of the Lions of Teranga now rests with them, as only these two sides and Sudan remain in the running to qualify from the group.
The Teranga Lions will go through on the second-to-last day if they manage to beat South Sudan and DR Congo fail to overcome Togo.
However, in a chat with FIFA.com, Bakambu, who described Senegal as the best team in Africa, stated that he’s still optimistic that Congo DR can qualify for the World Cup.

“We’re still on track even though we lost against Senegal. Where there’s life, there’s hope.
“It makes no difference if we qualify for the World Cup directly or through the play‑offs. The target is still the same. It won’t be easy, but we’ll do everything in our power.
“For me, Senegal are the best team in Africa. You could sense it on the pitch. They know all about playing on the biggest stage in the world.
“Nobody can say that Senegal didn’t deserve to win. Hats off to them. Just ask any of the Senegalese players – coming and getting a result at the Stade des Martyrs is no mean feat.”
