The Commonwealth Games Nigeria (CGN), under the auspices of the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), is set to organise an awareness programme on the negative effects of drug abuse among secondary school students.
The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the Olympafrica Centre in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos State.
According to a statement released by Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the NOC, the initiative aims to promote the core values of the Commonwealth—unity, equity, and youth empowerment. It also seeks to raise awareness of pressing global issues while addressing social vices through education and sports.
NOC Secretary-General, Tunde Popoola, emphasized that tackling drug abuse among youth remains a priority, and the programme will serve as a strategic platform to engage students in meaningful discussions. Additionally, the event will encourage social interaction among participants, enabling them to learn more about CGN’s activities and initiatives.
The programme is open to students aged 14 to 17 from both public and private schools, with at least 15 schools expected to participate. Youths from the Amuwo Odofin community who utilize the Olympafrica Centre will also be included in the event.
Renowned medical expert Dr. Adebukola Bojuwoye will facilitate the seminar, providing insights on the dangers of drug use and the role of sports as a rehabilitative tool in combating societal challenges.
As part of the initiative, participating students will receive branded T-shirts, certificates of participation, and sports equipment, including volleyballs, basketballs, and footballs for their respective schools. Youths at the Olympafrica Centre will also be given footballs. Refreshments will be provided for all attendees.
The programme will commence at 10 a.m. and conclude by 5 p.m. It will be formally declared open by the President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel.
