Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has assured that Nigeria are fully prepared to face Benin Republic despite the suspension of star winger Ademola Lookman ahead of Tuesday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo.
Lookman, who featured in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Lesotho on Friday, picked up his second yellow card of the qualifying campaign in the 64th minute and will miss the encounter through suspension. He was later replaced by Samuel Chukwueze.

Chelle backs squad depth and mentality
Speaking after the match, Chelle dismissed concerns about the absence of the Atalanta forward, insisting that the team remains focused and confident.
The Malian tactician said the Super Eagles possess the depth and mentality to overcome the setback and secure maximum points.
“Ademola has been outstanding, but we have players capable of stepping up,” Chelle said. “The group understands what’s at stake, and we’re ready to fight for the result we need.”
He added that Lookman would continue to support his teammates from the sidelines, as the squad push for qualification.
Focus shifts to Benin clash
Chelle emphasised the importance of converting chances and maintaining focus throughout the contest, stating that Nigeria must take charge of their qualification destiny.
Despite Friday’s win, Nigeria remain third in Group C behind Benin and South Africa and will need a convincing performance in Uyo to stay in contention for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
