Utah Governor Cox says Tyler Robinson, 22, confessed and was handed over by family in Charlie Kirk’s killing.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has announced that a suspect has been arrested over the killing of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, confirming that family members played a key role in turning him in.
“We got him,” Cox said, naming the suspect as Tyler Robinson. “A family member helped bring him into custody, and together with a friend, they ensured that he was handed over. I want to thank his family for doing the right thing.”
Cox disclosed that Robinson, who is from south-west Utah and not a student at Utah Valley University, had shown signs of growing radicalisation in recent years. “A family member reported that he had become more political and that he didn’t like Kirk,” the governor said.
Law enforcement sources earlier revealed that Robinson had confessed to his father before being taken into custody. Investigators also recovered spent bullet casings at the scene, which carried chilling inscriptions. One casing was marked: “Hey fascist! Catch!”
A mugshot of Robinson has since been released by authorities.
Cox praised the cooperation between the suspect’s relatives and law enforcement, stressing that it helped bring the case to a swift breakthrough. “His family did the right thing. They showed courage at a difficult time,” he said.
FBI Director Kash Patel hailed the speed of the investigation, declaring: “Historic progress was made in 33 hours. This was a coordinated effort, and it shows the strength of law enforcement when we work together.”
A detailed timeline of the investigation has been released by officials, tracking the case from Kirk’s killing to Robinson’s arrest within just over a day.
