CBN Warns Nigerians Against Naira Spraying, Hawking, Mutilation – Daily Trust


The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has cautioned Nigerians to stop spraying, hawking, mutilating, or counterfeiting the naira, describing it as a “critical national symbol” that must be respected and protected.

Speaking at the CBN Fair held in Kaduna, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, who represented the Governor of the Bank, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, said the apex bank would continue to sensitize the public on the need to handle the naira with care.

“I encourage you to respect and keep the Naira clean. Do not spray, hawk, mutilate or counterfeit the Naira. It is our critical national symbol,” she stressed.

According to her, the CBN Fair was designed as a platform to interact with members of the public on the Bank’s policies for sustainable economic growth and development. She noted that one of the core objectives of the engagement was to enlighten Nigerians on how CBN’s policies enhance their daily lives and livelihoods.

Mrs. Sidi Ali also urged Nigerians to seek information only from the Bank’s verified channels to avoid falling victim to misinformation.

“I urge everyone here to rely only on information disseminated through the verifiable official channels of the Central Bank of Nigeria,”.

In his welcome address, the Branch Controller of the CBN Kaduna Branch, Mr. Ahmed Dalhatu, described the Fair as one of the Bank’s major public enlightenment initiatives “aimed at sensitising members of the public on the Bank’s policies, programmes, and interventions.”

He explained that the event serves as a platform to deepen financial literacy, promote transparency, and strengthen trust between the Bank and Nigerians.

Mr. Dalhatu further emphasized the importance of public awareness in navigating global and local economic challenges.

“As we navigate the evolving economic landscape both globally and locally the need for increased public awarenesses of monetary policy, financial inclusion, consumer protection, digital payments, and intervention programmes cannot be overemphasised. The CBN remains committed to ensuring a sound financial system and an inclusive economy where every Nigerian can thrive,” he added.
