Carabao Cup: Tottenham crush Doncaster to reach fourth round

Tottenham Hotspur booked their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round with a comfortable 3-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

Head coach Thomas Frank rang the changes, making seven alterations from the side that drew with Brighton on Saturday, but Spurs showed their strength in depth from the outset.

Bayern Munich loanee João Palhinha opened the scoring with an acrobatic overhead kick after Doncaster failed to clear a corner, before Wilson Odobert’s dangerous cross was turned into his own net by defender Jay McGrath just three minutes later.

Spurs continued to dominate, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading narrowly wide and Archie Grey forcing a smart stop, while Doncaster’s best chance came on the stroke of half-time when captain Owen Bailey’s volley was tipped onto the post by Antonin Kinsky.

The League One side showed more intent after the restart, as Glenn Middleton’s free-kick brushed the side-netting, but they struggled to trouble their Premier League hosts.

Lucas Bergvall had a late strike disallowed for offside, yet Brennan Johnson added gloss to the scoreline with the final kick of the game, racing clear to slot home Tottenham’s third.
