Carabao Cup: Eze nets first Arsenal goal in Gunners 2-0 win over Port Vale

Eberechi Eze opened his Arsenal goal account as the Gunners booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Port Vale.

The £60m summer signing struck in the eighth minute, slotting home from Gabriel Martinelli’s pass to give Mikel Arteta’s side the perfect start at Vale Park. It was Eze’s first goal in six appearances since joining from Crystal Palace.

The League One hosts battled bravely, threatening from set-pieces and almost equalising when Devante Cole went close late on. But Arsenal sealed progression when substitute Leandro Trossard smashed in a second goal to kill off the contest.

Despite their illustrious FA Cup history, Arsenal have lifted the League Cup only twice, in 1987 and 1993.

After reaching last season’s semi-finals, Arteta will hope his strengthened squad can mount another deep run in this year’s competition.
