The campus community at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is
in mourning over the drowning of a 400-level student.
The deceased student, Damilola Balogun, a final-year student
of adult education, died on September 19 at Museyo Beach in Ijebu-Lekki.
Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, UNILAG spokesperson, confirmed the
development to TheCable on Monday.
Multiple accounts of the incident purported that the student
was attempting a backflip stunt when he was swept away by the beach waves.
Candlelight processions, it is understood, will be held in
his honour on September 23, at the faculty of education, by 6 pm.
The deceased student was elected the president of the
Nigerian University Education Students Association (NUESA) UNILAG chapter after
serving as the vice president of the association.
Reacting to the news of his death, Peter Oyewole,
ex-president of NUESA UNILAG, said, “my feeling died with him.”
Ayomide Adegboro, president-elect of the Communication
Students’ Association (COMSA), described Balogun as a person who has a jovial
spirit and is always willing to serve.
“Confirming his death from the dean of the education faculty
really struck me. I’ve heard so much about the impact he has made on the
faculty,” he said.
“I was still in a meeting with him last week; he had a
jovial spirit and was really willing to get to work and serve alongside other
faculty presidents. May his soul live on.”
