Despite a court order barring the Nigeria Police from enforcing the tinted glass permit policy, officers in Calabar, Cross River State, continue to harass motorists and impound vehicles.
On Wednesday, journalists observed about fifteen policemen and traffic wardens stationed outside Akim Police Station along IBB Way, stopping vehicles and demanding tinted glass permits, even from drivers with factory-fitted or untinted glass.
Mr. John Osakwe, a local journalist, was stopped and had his car key seized after an officer claimed his front and rear glass shades differed, demanding a ₦30,000 permit.
“I showed them my complete papers, but they insisted on a permit for my untinted glass,” Osakwe said.
After intervention from DSP Irene Ugbo, the Police Public Relations Officer, his key was returned, though the officer still pressed for the permit payment.
Another victim, commercial bus driver Mr. Edem Udofia, had his vehicle impounded for its factory-fitted glass.
“My family depends on this bus, and I’m struggling to resolve this,” he said.
Mba Ukweni (SAN) condemned the police actions as unlawful and in contempt of the court order, highlighting the ongoing disregard for judicial rulings.
