An existing two-storey residential building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of Lagos early Monday morning, injuring 15 occupants, including four children.
The incident occurred at 54, Cole Street, Cemetery Bus Stop, by UBA bank, Oyingbo, prompting an immediate response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS).
According to a situation report issued by the Controller General of the LSFRS, Margaret Adeseye, the distress call was received at about midnight with rescue teams from the Sari Iganmu fire station arriving on the scene just nine minutes later.
The report indicated that the ongoing rescue operation is focused on a building that had reportedly shown “marked distress” prior to the collapse.
The supposed cause of the emergency is officially listed as “Distress.”
A total of 15 adults have been successfully rescued from the rubble with varying degrees of injury.
The casualties include seven male adults, four female adults, and four children.
The injured were immediately transported to two separate medical facilities – Federal Medical Center, Ebute Meta, and General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island for urgent care.
The LSFRS is continuing its work at the site, though the immediate focus remains on ensuring no other victims are trapped beneath the debris.
The Controller General’s statement serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by structural integrity issues in buildings across the state.
