The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 1-1 draw by the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash on Tuesday.

Nigeria fell behind in the 25th minute when captain William Troost-Ekong scored an own goal. However, the Super Eagles leveled the score just before halftime through Calvin Bassey’s strike, which has since sparked controversy.

Bassey’s goal appeared to deflect off his head before brushing his hand and finding its way into the far corner of the net. Despite protests, the goal stood, drawing heated reactions on social media.

The result leaves Nigeria on 11 points, while South Africa sit top of the group with 17 points. The draw has further complicated Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
