Breaking: NEC Takes Decision on Damagum As PDP National Chairman

FCT, Abuja – Despite calls for his resignation, the national executive committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed Umar Damagum as the national chairman.

The resolution was taken on Monday, August 25, at the 102nd NEC meeting at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

As reported by The Cable, Damagum was appointed acting national chairman in March 2023 after the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu — a decision later upheld by the court.

Before his appointment, Damagum was the PDP national deputy chairman (north).

The NEC meeting was briefly stopped for the brief swearing in ceremony conducted by the national legal adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade.

In his acceptance speech, Damagum thanked other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for making his work easier.

He also thanked members of NEC for appreciating his efforts in repositioning the party which led to his confirmation.

PDP national chairman earlier told to step down

Legit.ng earlier reported that the PDP acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, had been asked to step down from his position next week.

Reports say the party’s governors allegedly asked Damagum to step down at the next NEC meeting, which is scheduled for October 24.

The next PDP NEC meeting was scheduled to address potential issues in the party, including the party’s next convention, which was slated for December.

APC taunts PDP govs

Elsewhere, Legit.ng reported that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has tackled the PDP governors for claiming that the ruling party is without vision and mission and is heading for defeat in the 2027 election.

Felix Morka, APC publicity secretary, in a statement issued on Monday, August 25, explained what the PDP governors should prioritise rather than “mislead” Nigerians.

Morka said:

“The PDP has since collapsed and stands rejected by Nigerians.”

2027: “I’ll run for presidency,” Atiku declares

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that amid recent reports that he might opt out of the race, former vice president Atiku Abubakar announced his presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 election.

Atiku made his intention for the nation’s top job known over the weekend through one of his top aides, Tunde Olusunle.

The former VP recently dumped the PDP and adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a coalition platform aimed at challenging President Tinubu in 2027.
