Breaking: “I’ll Run for Presidency,” Atiku Declares Ahead of 2027 Election

Legit.ng journalist Esther Odili has over two years of experience covering political parties and movements.

In a significant twist of events, former vice president Atiku Abubakar has confirmed that he will run for the Presidency in 2027.

Atiku gave the clarification through one of his spokespersons, Tunde Olusunle, during the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking with ThisDay, Olusunle disclosed that Atiku would run again in 2027 because Nigeria needs to be saved from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

As reported by Daily Trust, this followed reports that Atiku may reconsider his presidential bid after Professor Ola Olateju from Achievers University suggested that Atiku is more focused on improving Nigeria than on the presidency itself.

Recting, Atiku distanced himself from the comments, stating from his holiday home in the UAE that the remarks were unauthorised.

“When people stand in for me at events, we preview my thoughts on the instant subject. In this particular instance, there was no engagement with me to distil my thoughts. Prof. Olateju was not speaking for me,” Olateju, who represented Atiku at an event in Lagos, quoted the former vice president as saying.

“I will run in 2027. Nigeria needs to be decisively rescued from the intensive care unit it has been consigned to. The degeneration in our country, the level of poverty and pain, the anguish, is unacceptable.”

ADC gaining momentum after Atiku’s move

Recall that in June 2025, Atiku Abubakar dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined forces with other major opposition leaders, including Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, to form a coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The alliance is expected to challenge President Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Why North will back Atiku-Obi ticket

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that political analyst, Dare Glintstone Akinniyi, predicted the fate of former vice president Atiku Abubakar if he eventually decides to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, Akinniyi explained what will happen if Atiku picks Peter Obi as his running mate in the next general elections.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Atiku Abubakar assured that the newly adopted coalition party, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), will challenge Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Atiku stated this recently and maintained that Nigeria “can never be a one-party state,” hence the need for the ADC to unseat Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027.
