Breaking: ASUU suspends warning strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially suspended its ongoing two-week warning strike following an overnight meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC), which ended at 4am on Wednesday.

Announcing the decision at a press briefing in Abuja, the National President of ASUU, Prof. Chris Piwuna, stated that the suspension comes as a result of renewed engagements with the federal government and the intervention of several stakeholders, including students, parents and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

“While we are not completely satisfied with the progress made so far, we acknowledge that the government has returned to the negotiation table,” Piwuna said.

“In recognition of the efforts by well-meaning Nigerians, NEC resolved to suspend the warning strike.”

ASUU had commenced the strike on Monday, October 13, 2025 to protest the federal government’s delay in meeting several longstanding demands.

These include the finalisation of the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, release of withheld salaries amounting to three and a half months, revitalisation and sustainable funding of public universities and an end to what the union described as the victimisation of its members at Lagos State University (LASU), Prince Abubakar Audu University and FUTO.

Other demands include the payment of outstanding 25-35% salary arrears, arrears of over four years for academic promotions and the release of withheld third-party deductions such as cooperative contributions and union dues.

Though the union noted that much work still lies ahead in addressing these issues, the leadership said the decision to suspend the strike was taken to allow space for further dialogue and to show goodwill towards the ongoing negotiation process.
