Borussia M’gladbach 0-4 Werder Bremen: Victor Boniface shines on debut to end winless run

Victor Boniface announced his arrival at Werder Bremen in fine style on Sunday, coming off the bench to register an assist in the club’s emphatic 4-0 Bundesliga victory away to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker endured a turbulent summer, with Bayer Leverkusen placing him on the transfer list after a season disrupted by injuries.

AC Milan appeared his most likely destination, but the move collapsed despite Boniface undergoing multiple medicals.

Instead, Werder Bremen swooped late in the window to secure him on loan, a deal many felt was a gamble given his fitness struggles.

After the international break delayed his debut, Boniface was named among the substitutes by head coach Horst Steffen as Bremen sought their first win of the season.

By half-time, the visitors were already in control, with Samuel Mbangula opening the scoring before Jens Stage doubled the advantage.

Gladbach’s woes deepened in the second half when Romano Schmid converted from the penalty spot in the 74th minute.

A minute later, Steffen introduced Boniface, who wasted no time making an impression. Just six minutes into his cameo, he set up Justin Njinmah – a German of Nigerian descent – to slot home Bremen’s fourth goal and seal a resounding away victory.

Super Eagles full-back Felix Agu also featured throughout the match, adding further Nigerian interest to Bremen’s triumph.

The win unveil a sharp turnaround for Werder Bremen, who had opened the campaign with a 4-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt before drawing 3-3 with Boniface’s parent club, Leverkusen.

With four points now on the board, Bremen climbed to ninth in the Bundesliga standings, their confidence lifted by the immediate impact of their new signing.
