Victor Boniface has returned to Germany as AC Milan continue to deliberate on whether to complete his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen amid concerns over his fitness.
The Nigerian striker, 24, underwent medical tests with the Rossoneri on Friday and Saturday, but the condition of his right knee, previously injured in 2019 and 2020, has raised doubts.
Milan are said to be taking extra time before committing to a deal, with Boniface also missing several matches last season due to muscle issues.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan could ultimately walk away from negotiations
However, Sky Sport Italia reports that the club may still sign Boniface along with another striker before the transfer window closes.
Sporting director Igli Tare clarified the situation, saying: “There were no extra medicals. We knew that he had problems in the past, we are evaluating everything as planned with regards to the health and fitness of the player.
“His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
The uncertainty comes at a difficult moment for Milan, who opened their Serie A campaign with a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Cremonese on Saturday night.
