Bolt is the most downloaded travel and mobility app in Nigeria 2025

A leading e-mobility app in Nigeria, Bolt, is celebrating being named the most-downloaded travel and mobility app in Nigeria in 2025 so far. The company disclosed this in a statement to Technext, noting that the data was obtained from a digital intelligence analytics company, Sensor Tower.

According to the shared mobility platform, which operates in more than 50 countries with over 200 million combined global users, this feat puts it above other competitors in the Nigerian market like Uber, Bolt and inDrive. The company also said Nigeria is one of 23 countries where it obtained the status of the most downloaded travel and mobility app.

Speaking about the milestone, Bolt Nigeria General Manager, Osi Oguah, while expressing his elation at the feat, said there is still room for improvement and his team is poised to make those improvements.

“Nigeria is one of 23 countries where Bolt holds the number one position in app downloads within the travel and mobility category. We are pleased that Nigerians are enjoying Bolt, but we’ve still got room to grow further and faster. We’re going to keep accelerating and expanding into more cities, launching new services where possible, and enhancing the Bolt app with new features to deliver the best experience possible,” he said.

Bolt first entered the Nigerian market in 2016 as Taxify, launching in Lagos. Since then, the company has expanded rapidly to 33 cities nationwide, including Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Benin City, Calabar, Ibadan and others. The company prides itself on offering Nigerians affordable and reliable mobility options.

The company has also been intentional about making safety its focus with the introduction of various in-app safety features, such as real-time GPS tracking, the ability to share emergency contacts, and an in-app button for immediate assistance to provide reassurance to users. It also announced a €100 million fund dedicated to safety over the next three years.

Speaking on the company’s safety drive, Regional Manager of North and West Africa, Lola Masha, noted that the company is excited to do everything it can to ensure that both drivers and riders have a pleasant experience on every ride.

The truth is, as a business, we cannot be successful if we cannot ensure that every single ride that our drivers and riders take ends successfully. And it will be futile for us to not spend resources and effort to keep every ride as safe as possible. It is a major priority area for us which is why we have invested huge resources to make sure that safety remains a priority and we minimise incidents to as close to zero as possible,” she said.

But it hasn’t been without its problems, though, as issues of driver welfare, driver earnings and safety continue to arise despite the company’s efforts. The recent data naming Bolt as the most downloaded app comes as a relief, as it places the app ahead of other global competitors, reaffirming its leading position in one of Africa’s largest mobility markets.

As part of its ongoing investment in innovation and customer experience, Bolt recently introduced the “Family Profile” feature in Nigeria. This new functionality allows users to manage and pay for rides for up to nine other people from a single account, improving convenience, safety, and financial oversight, particularly for families and caregivers.

The company also launched a first-of-its-kind dashcam service. This will be a feature in its app that will allow drivers to turn their mobile phones into a forward-facing exterior and driver-facing interior dash camera, with videos backed up in the cloud.

Bolt says its commitment to accessible and inclusive transportation continues to drive its success in the region, supported by ongoing product updates, expansion to underserved areas, and a focus on affordability and safety.
