Boat Mishap in Niger State Claims 29 Lives, Leaves Others Missing



A tragic boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State has left at least 29 people feared dead and several others missing. 

The boat, carrying 90 passengers, mostly women and children, capsized at Gausawa after departing from Tunga Sule in Shagunu Ward en route to Dugga for a condolence visit.

The Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the incident to journalists, stating that the boat was overloaded and collided with a tree stump underwater. 

He noted that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, despite state regulations.According to NSEMA’s Desk Officer leading the search and rescue efforts, 29 bodies have been recovered, 50 people were rescued alive, and two remain missing. 

Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate any additional survivors or victims.
