In a statement, UNHCR stressed the need for long-term solutions to the migrant crisis: “Because safe and legal pathways are available to only a very small number of people, the real solution is to end the war in Sudan so families can return home in safety and not take these dangerous journeys.”

Initial reports indicated that a baby was among those who lost their lives. However, details about the infant’s identity and age have not yet been confirmed by UNHCR or humanitarian organizations assisting survivors.

This latest tragedy underscores the growing dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross the central Mediterranean route to Europe, particularly those fleeing conflict in Sudan.

Aid groups and United Nations agencies continue to call for urgent improvements in safe migration channels and stronger rescue operations to prevent further loss of life.
